Alan Scotcher Commonwealth Gold Medallist in Swimming

Alex Scotcher, 2006 Commonwealth gold medallist in swimming, kicked off the School Sports Partnership’s ‘Step into Sport’ Conference which was held at William Beamont this year, with a talk about the importance of volunteers in his development as an elite athlete, facing personal challenges and the benefits of volunteering.

The second annual ‘Step into Sport’ conference prepared 50 students from high schools and colleges across Warrington for volunteering placements in community based sports clubs and activity sessions which might include a range of activities from administration tasks, to coaching to media development.

Students took part in practical workshops to give them information on how to deliver multi-skills activity sessions to young people, tried out the American craze of cup-stacking and also spent time talking with young people who have already benefited from the programme. Representatives from sports clubs were also invited to the event so they could be linked with students who wish to volunteer in specific sports settings.
